LIBRARIES
The Libraries of the Madrid City Council are included in the series of public spaces that can be used as climate refuges during the summer months, especially during a heat wave. Climate refuges are easily accessible buildings or spaces that offer a suitable temperature, rest areas and water.
Public libraries are open all year round and are free; you don't even need a library card to use their facilities, you can just walk in and sit down to read a book, or a magazine or a newspaper. They have Wi-Fi, so you can use your mobile devices; and you can enjoy the different activities they put on, such as exhibitions. It’s still worthwhile taking out a library card and it’s really easy to do so, all you have to do is present an official ID document. Having a card opens the door to many more services, for example, you can borrow books, magazines, films or music (both physically and virtually thanks to the Ebiblio platform and CineMadrid); and you can use a computer with access to internet inside the library.
A library is a pleasant, quiet and safe space where you can spend as much time as you like. Summer opening hours (from 15 June to 15 September): Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 8pm. 6 of our libraries are also open on Saturdays and Sundays from 8:30am to 2 pm until 15 July and from September on.
This summer, three of our libraries are also putting on an activity as part of the Culture is Cool programme - stand-up comedy courtesy of Sergio Pazos.
