The Yokai Revolution

In this workshop, we will look at the relationship between Japanese folklore and traditions and the products of contemporary urban culture, such as anime. We will explore what makes the Yokai, the supernatural folk characters of Japan, so different from European characters. We’ll have fun playing team games: we’ll create a drawing of a Yokai based on a description, and we’ll make an origami kappa (河童) - a kind of monster that lives in water, especially in rivers and lakes - with our family members, and we’ll be able to take it home with us.

Taeko Kojima  graduated from the Kyoto University of Education and is a qualified teacher of Japanese as a foreign language. She has extensive experience as a teacher in both Japan and Spain, at all levels - she teaches children from the age of 12 as well as adults. She has been living in Spain for almost twenty years; through her work she has been able to build bridges between her native culture and that of her adopted country. A mother of three, she lives in Madrid and is the most senior educator among the Casa Asia staff.
