A String Section

In 2010, Leen Dewilde began destroying things, breaking cups, tearing down walls, cutting up furniture and sawing the legs off chairs. That was how A String Section began, one of the Reckless Sleepers' most important works: a simple set of five chairs, five women and five saws. A project in which the production of sawdust, the leftover chair legs, the half-broken seats, the residue of the action is equally as important as the action itself. Since then, this project has been presented in art galleries, theatres, a church and a department store, in the open air, by the sea, in an Italian courtyard, under a bridge… and now in the Southern Courtyard of the Condeduque Cultural Centre, next to the Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art.

Founded in Nottingham in 1989, the members of the Reckless Sleepers Company are trained dancers, visual and performance artists, and actors. In the more than 35 years that the company has been creating and presenting its work, it has produced pieces such as The Last Supper, Spanish Train, Schrödinger or Negative Space. Their theatrical performances and activities, designed for both conventional theatres and site-specific events, tend to be both entertaining and provocative. In addition to their theatrical projects, they also produce a range of educational programmes for centres and institutions such as the National Museum of Scotland.
