The urban dance style known as breaking or breakdancing, which originated in the United States in the 60s, made its Olympic debut at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires. Such was its success that the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics will introduce breaking to the Olympic programme as a new sport.
Putting Steps Together: Breaking Workshop for Young People from China and Spain (Uniendo Pasos: Taller de Breaking para jóvenes de China y España) is a series of workshops organised by the Samaranch Foundation and the Ningbo Sports Office, in collaboration with the Chinese Sports Dance Federation and the Chinese Cultural Centre in Madrid. The workshops will combine the passion and energy of breakdancing with the rich cultural tradition of China and Spain, which is where the young people taking part in the workshops come from.
There will be four workshops in total, given by four coaches from the National Breaking Team (led by Graciel Stenio, the creator of NTamo Performance). Each of the four workshops will include around eight minutes of “choreography” with an added sporty touch.
The results of the workshops will be presented on 27 July, demonstrating that the universal language of dance can transcend borders and unite people from different backgrounds.
