Puccini Dance Circus Opera, per coro di corpi e strumenti

Choreographer Caterina Mochi Sismondi founded the Italian troupe blucinQue in 2018. Since then, the author and artistic director of the Café Müller Theatre in the company’s hometown of Turin, has created several choreographic works based on such figures as Fellini or Puccini. The company now presents its latest work, about this latter composer in fact, at the Veranos de la Villa Festival thanks to the collaboration of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Madrid and the Italian Embassy in Madrid. It is entitled Puccini Dance Circus Opera, per coro di corpi e strumenti.

Based on the characteristics and personalities of the five main characters from Tosca, Madame Butterfly, Manon Lescaut, Turandot and Mimí, blucinQue builds a show that revolves around movement and the use of space in this “chorus of bodies”, which, although it lacks bel canto in its traditional form, does feature a 43-piece orchestra, musical scores with electronic interference, choreography in the air and on the aerial and ground, and fragmented, dreamlike glimpses of text and images. These female figures are not only the icons presented by the composer, but also real women known to Puccini himself, portrayed on stage by the actor Ivan Ieri and his “mirror image”, and images of a world that still requires us to reflect on female identity in today’s world.
