Maria Callas in the Voice of Pilar Jurado

The opera singer Maria Callas would have been 100 years old in 2023. In the year of her centenary, the multi-talented soprano, composer and orchestra conductor Pilar Jurado decided to pay tribute to the Greek soprano by performing some of the most spectacular arias from her repertoire in this dramatized recital, Maria Callas in the Voice of Pilar Jurado. “La Divina”, as she was known, was gifted with a wide vocal register and an incredible interpretative stage flexibility that allowed her to tackle roles normally reserved for different types of voice. These unique qualities ensured that her recitals were quite out of the ordinary. Pilar Jurado is one of the few contemporary singers capable of performing the arias that established Callas as the greatest lyrical singer of the 20th century.

Pilar Jurado is one of the most singular figures in European classical music. Considered a muse of contemporary creation by luminaries such as Giuseppe Sinopoli, Harry Halbreich or Brian Ferneyhough, she is the first woman in history to have premièred her own opera, The Empty Page (La página en blanco), at the Teatro Real (Opera House). She also wrote the libretto and performed one of the leading roles. She now takes to the stage of the Central Courtyard of the Condeduque Cultural Centre to commemorate the essence and spirit of Callas and to remind us that her legacy lives on and that her character and magic will continue to inspire future generations.
