Kimono, a changing identity: a century in the spotlight

Madrid and Japan, as the guest country of this year’s Veranos de la Villa Festival, converge in 2024 to create a cultural kaleidoscope that celebrates diversity and the fusion of traditions in the very heart of the city. Thanks to the various activities included in the programme, we will be able to enjoy the diversity of Japanese culture. A good example is this exhibition, which invites the visitor to discover the secrets of the kimono.

Curated by the Valencia Kimono Club Association - led by Anna Miró, Miryam Navarro de Palencia and Laura Pérez - Kimono, A Changing Identity: a Century in the Spotlight (Kimono, identidad cambiante: un siglo a pie de calle) arrives at the Serrería Belga (The Belgian Sawmill) Cultural Space to take visitors on a journey through the history of this ancestral garment, from the early 20th century to the present day. The artefacts on display, which are entirely original, will allow us to explore how kimonos have adapted to the trends of each new decade, undergoing changes that are virtually invisible to the Western eye. Nineteen complete sets of this Japanese costume, as worn by women on the street, and a bridal outfit from the Taishō period (1912-1926), along with a range of accessories including handbags, shoes, obidome (jewellery) and magazines, to show how the kimono has evolved over the years.
