Expressiveness in Manga for adolescents

One of the most striking aspects of Manga is just how expressive the characters are. In this workshop, we will try out a few basic techniques that will help us make sure our characters communicate their emotions through different facial and body expressions.

After studying at the Escola Joso, Kenny Ruiz worked as an illustrator for Disney at the Salvador Simó Artwork Studio on the trilogy The Lightning Hunter (El cazador de rayos) and The Mystery of Captain Nemo, the one-shot films Barcelona, Malefic. Soum, and the Two Swords (Dos espadas) series, with a script by Víctor Santos. He also drew Outrage, a manga set in the Infinity universe, and the Corvus Belli Miniatures game. In 2018, he worked with the Japanese publication Tezucomi, on a story inspired by the manga Boku No Songoku by maestro Osamu Tezuka. He combines all this with storyboard work for studios such as El viaje imposible, 737 Sahkers, BRB, AnimaKitchen and Ilion Studio. He also taught at the ESDIP School of Art in Madrid. He is working on two stories for the Japanese publication Tezucomi: Boku no Songoku and Team Phoenix. With a script by Kid Toussaint and colour by Noiry, he illustrated two series for Dupuis: Magic 7 and Telemaco. He is currently the sole author of Team Phoenix, a manga series for the Japanese publishing house Akita Shoten, inspired by the characters of the “god of Manga”, Osamu Tezuka.
