How to wear a Japanese kimono: Kitsuke

The kimono is a traditional Japanese garment and the national dress of Japan. The word “kitsuke” refers to the formal act of putting on a kimono, whether you are wearing it yourself or helping someone else to put it on. Nowadays, the kimono is worn on important special occasions such as graduations, weddings and other celebrations, but it is also frequently worn by people engaged in traditional Japanese arts, such as the tea ceremony. In this talk cum demonstration of kitsuke, Maestra Eiko Kishi and her assistant will show us how to put on a traditional kimono, explaining the entire process and telling us all about the accessories used, the different types of kimonos, and all sorts of interesting facts and information.

Eiko Kishi holds a BA in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Psychology. She teaches at the Misho-ryu School in Ikebana. She also performs other traditional Japanese artistic activities such as the Tea Ceremony, Kimono, Origami and Calligraphy demonstrations, and Koto (a Japanese musical instrument) performances. She is one of the founders of the Spanish Ikebana Association and of the Ikebana International Spain Castellana Chapter. In October 2016, she was awarded the Distinction of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan. Her extensive career stands as a testament to her tireless efforts to promote traditional Japanese culture in its myriad artistic manifestations.
