MUNICIPAL MUSEUMS OF MADRID CITY COUNCIL
The Municipal Museums of the Madrid City Council are included in the series of public spaces that can be used as climate refuges during the summer months, especially during a heat wave. Climate refuges are easily accessible buildings or spaces that offer a suitable temperature, rest areas and water. Public libraries are open all year round and free of charge. Thanks to their pleasant temperature and quiet atmosphere, these museums are great places to visit during the hottest hours of the day (from 3 to 5pm).
- At the Madrid History Museum, you’ll be able to see its magnificent permanent collection which documents life in the capital from the 14th century to the early 20th century. Among the most notable paintings is Goya’s Allegory of the City of Madrid. Visitors will also be able to enjoy the temporary photography exhibition, “Madrid in the 1960s. The Gaze of Alcoba” and the original reconstruction of “Madrid: The Uprising of the Second of May 1808 with Playmoclick figures.
- San Isidro Museum. The Origins of Madrid showcases the city’s archaeological heritage and the testimonies of the cultures that have succeeded one another down through the ages, as well as art and traditions associated with San Isidro. Some of the highlights of the collection include the Elephant of Orcasitas, the Roman mosaic of Carabanchel, the magnificent cenotaph of Beatriz Galindo, “La Latina”, and the The Virgin of the Milk , by Pedro Berruguete.
- Imprenta Municipal (The Municipal Press) Book Arts offers cultural content related to the history of the press, books and the arts that go hand in hand with them. In addition to the permanent collection, you can also visit the temporary exhibition “Face to the Board, Sharpening the Pencil”, dedicated to Frank Alpresa: a life of drawing and humour.
These spaces are open every day from 10am to 7pm, except Mondays when they are closed to the public.
This summer, as part of the Culture is Cool programme, the Madrid History Museum is also the venue for three stand-up comedy performances courtesy of Sergio Pazos.
