Anthropology / Rap
The Veranos de la Villa Festival proposes an unusual marriage between an academic discipline and the art of musical composition that is usually born and seen informally on the street, establishing an interest in the city and what happens in it as a common thematic nexus. To achieve this, the Festival has invited an anthropologist and a rapper to work and create side by side, as a way of rethinking and celebrating the city. Their joint work will generate texts that will be presented in the style of a cockfight, interpreted by two male and two female rappers, a dispute between villains based on reflection and affection for the city.
During the second part of the evening, the mike will be handed to a number of special guests, and then at the end there will be an open mike session for anyone who feels inspired to dedicate a rap to the city.
Adolfo Estalella is Professor of Anthropology at the Complutense University of Madrid. His work focuses on the city and its contemporary transformations, and in particular, on the practices used to produce knowledge that form part of how activists and citizens create a city.
Born in Madrid, Javier Benedicto is a creator of rap and urban music who has published several singles and albums under the name ‘Mentenguerra’.
