WELCOME TO VERANOS DE LA VILLA 2022
Nobel laureate José Saramago–a name that features in the 2022 festival programme–spoke of the immense, indescribable pleasure he took in walking. We have to agree with him in this new edition of Veranos de la Villa, with a programme of events that will, in part, be returning to Madrid’s streets, an ideal festival venue, inviting artists, creators and audiences to head back to all those places in the city that never lose their magic.
The 38th edition of Veranos de la Villa, organised by Madrid City Council's Department of Culture, Tourism and Sport, invites us to enjoy summer in the city and the city in summer. With a programme of over 70 national and international shows, by artists from Austria, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Morocco, Peru, Portugal, South Korea, Switzerland and Uruguay in collaboration with their diplomatic delegations, the festival aims to be a window that provides a cool, much-desired summer breeze in addition to offering us a look at what’s happening inside and outside of our city.
From 5 July to 28 August, this edition will bring together artists and members of the public from different generations with a programme packed with music, performing arts, circus, art and poetry, to name just some of the varied cultural offerings for all audiences that we’ll be able to enjoy. Established artists from the music and theatre scenes, such as Jane Birkin, John Malkovich, Argentina, José Luis Gómez, Antonio Najarro, Omara Portuondo, Martirio, Carmen París, Alizzz and Andrés Salado, will share the nights with lively events like a big outdoor roller verbena, or party, in Plaza de España—the first cultural activity to be held in the remodelled city square—as well as an exhibition on fashion and robotics, the rhythms of the cha-cha-cha, mambo, rumba, conga and bolero, courtesy of Cuba’s most important dance company, Litz Alfonso Dance Cuba, and a fun attempt to get users of municipal pools to compose the soundtrack for this summer in our city!
With our hearts set on enjoying all of the cultural offerings in Spain’s capital city over the summer months, we stand fully behind the slogan of this edition of the festival: Fall in love with Madrid.
