Estampas flamencas / El sombrero de tres picos

National Ballet of Spain and the Orchestra of the Community of Madrid

Estampas flamencas / El sombrero de tres picos

Directed by Rubén Olmo since September 2019, the Ballet Nacional de España (BNE) has been the leading public company in Spanish dance since it was founded in the late 1970s under the name Ballet Nacional Español. Since then, this company has often featured on the line-up of different Veranos de la Villa festivals. It returns once again this year with a programme intended to tie in with the celebrations to mark the Year of Picasso.

For Flamenco Scenes, Rubén Olmo and Miguel Ángel Corbacho have created four pieces that take their inspiration from the style, aesthetics and character of Antonio Ruiz Soler. These choreographies retrace traditional flamenco from its origins, both in terms of costumes and music.

Hijo del alba, a Picassian-inspired solo, performed by Rubén Olmo with his personal dance language, represents the birth of a new life: man and artist. It is the representation of feelings, differences and contradictions of each of them in a single character: the harlequin.

And finally, The Three-cornered Hat, one of the most emblematic works in the company’s repertoire. In the realm of the stylisation of popular rhythms and dances, both Manuel de Falla’s score - interpreted on this occasion by the Orchestra of the Community of Madrid, under the artistic direction of maestro Manuel Coves- and Antonio Ruiz Soler’s choreography are veritable masterpieces. This production also recreates the costumes and reproduces the backdrops and scenery that Pablo Picasso created for the London première in 1919 of Léonide Massine’s version performed by Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes.
