El barberillo de Lavapiés

In 2023, the Zarzuela world is celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of maestro Barbieri who was the main driving force behind this musical genre that is so closely associated with Madrid. In his works, such districts as Las Vistillas, El Pardo and the neighbourhood of Lavapiés were key players and he in fact imbued them with a geographical and costumbrist reality that brought the plot closer to the spectator and forged bonds with an audience that welcomed his premières with great acclaim.

The Veranos de la Villa festival joins in with this commemoration and proudly brings to the Central Courtyard of the Condeduque Centre for Contemporary Culture, the RTVE Symphony Orchestra and Choir and their production of The Little Barber of Lavapiés. Conducted by Miquel Ortega and with Diego Carvajal as stage director, the audience will be sure to enjoy this Zarzuela in which love affairs become entwined with political or pseudo-historical intrigues in the Madrid of the days following the Esquilache Mutiny of 1766. Sensitive to the prevailing social unrest, Barbieri introduces us to the barber Lamparilla and Paloma, the seamstress, two characters from the common people, as protagonists of and masterminds behind the solution to the problems faced by the Marquesita and Don Luis, both members of the aristocracy.
