Classical music
As has been the tradition in recent Veranos de la Villa Festivals, a number of nights are set aside for classical music performed in attractive open-air venues by first-rate ensembles. The Quiroga Quartet, which is the resident ensemble at the Cerralbo Museum of Madrid and which for many years has been responsible for the Royal Palace's Palatina Collection of Decorated Stradivarius, received the National Music Prize in 2018 and has received awards in the most prestigious international competitions for quartets. Today it is considered one of the most outstanding and active of the new generation of European ensembles and it is internationally recognised for its strong personality and its audacious and innovative interpretations. The desire to pay tribute to the great Galician violinist Manuel Quiroga, one of the most important instrumentalists in our musical history, was the genesis of the ensemble.
The programme, which has been specially conceived for this evening, comprises Quartet Op. 3, by Manuel Canales (1747-1786), (a piece that features in the ensemble’s forthcoming album, Héritage: La música de Madrid en tiempos de Goya, and which they will play for the first time in public to mark this occasion); and the well-known string quartet Death and the Maiden, by Franz Schubert (1797-1828).
